This pastoral excursion begins with a visit to Lucca. You’ll have free time to browse in this inviting town before continuing on through the rolling green hills above Lucca to Colle Verde, a rural retreat and farm where some of Italy’s best-quality olive oil is pressed. During your half-day excursion, learn about the process by which olive oil is extracted and refined. Then enjoy a light lunch and an olive oil tasting session.
Assisi and Spello - Day 8
Departs in the afternoon (4.5 hours) - $65 USD
Embark on an afternoon tour of Assisi, a hilltop medieval town that was the birthplace of Saint Francis. Marvel at the restoration of the Basilica San Francesco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, after twin earthquakes shook the city in 1997. Then take a guided tour of the town of Spello, known for its tiny stone houses that dot the countryside. Off the usual tourist route, Spello exists for the 6,000 residents that call it home. Enter through one of the three Roman stone arches and explore cobblestone streets that meander in and out of mysterious alleyways. Be sure to see the wonderful frescoes by Pinturicchio—depicting scenes from the New Testament—which are located in the 12th century church of S. Maria Maggiore.
